What is the Delaware Time Travelers Program?

Delaware Time Travelers is a volunteer program which provides a hands-on heritage education experience. Volunteers on Time Traveler missions work with Mission Leaders (Parks archaeologists and historians) to excavate prehistoric and historic archaeological sites; wash, catalog, and research the artifacts recovered during the excavations; and conduct historical research for the sites under study.

Park interpreters use the information Time Travelers bring to light to tell the story of past life in Delaware's State Parks through exhibits, publications, videos, and living history programs.

Who are Delaware Time Travelers?

Delaware Time Travelers are Delaware State Parks volunteers of all ages who are interested in learning about life in the past. They learn about the past by working with Parks archaeologists and historians to uncover the secrets of the past through archaeological and historical research. Youths under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a participating adult. New Time Travelers begin their first mission as Time Traveler Recruits. After 20 hours of service, they are promoted to Apprentice Time Travelers. This can usually be achieved by working on two two-day weekend missions. Promotion to Master Time Traveler comes after 40 additional hours of service. Time Travelers with 120 hours of service who are willing to assist with the administrative aspects of a mission may apply to become Time Travel Warrant Officers. Patches will be awarded to mark promotions and accumulated hours. Time Travelers with special skills such as photography, drafting, surveying, or illustration may serve as Mission Specialists. For certain missions, chemists, geologists, soil scientists or other specialists may also be needed.
