Charles Tilton: African-American Farmer

Back to Tilton Site Main Page

The second national census, conducted in 1800, lists eleven people in the Tilton household: Charles and his wife Dolley, and their nine children, Thomas, Mingo, Jacob, Peter, Nancy, Prisella, Benjamin, Charles, and William. At the time of his death in December of 1806, at around the age of 40, Mr. Tilton owned 120 acres of land. Not including the land, his estate was valued at $643.50, placing the Tiltons among the wealthier farm families in Kent County. Because Charles Tilton was relatively well-off, he wrote a will and his neighbors made an inventory of his possessions after he died. This inventory gives us a glimpse at life in the Tilton home.
