Nearly everyone is curious about the lives of people in the past. People have lived in the areas that are now state parks for thousands of years. Traces of their lives can be found in most of our state parks, in the archaeological sites that have been preserved along with the natural environment.

A dig at a Delaware State Park The people who left behind evidence of their lives in Delaware’s State Parks include Native Americans, African-Americans, early European settlers, 19th-century farmers, and millers. Archaeologists (scientists who study the evidence of people’s lives in the past) are studying a few of these sites so that we can all learn about the people who lived here. Other sites will be carefully preserved for the future.
