Alapocas Run State Park
Delaware State Parks offers top-rope climbing in Alapocas Run State Park. Top-rope climbing is a form of climbing in which the rope is anchored to the top of the climb prior to climbing. Top roping does not require placing any protection during the climb. The rope is run from the climber, through an anchor at the top of the climb and then back down to attach to the belayer. The belayer is able to stop a falling climber immediately, which makes top-rope climbing one of the safest forms of climbing.
Wilmington State Parks
In addition to top roping, Wilmington State Park also offers rappelling opportunities. Rappelling is a controlled descent on a rope from an anchor on the top of a rock or cliff face. The person rappelling controls his own rope and the speed of the descent. Like top-rope climbing, rappelling requires a mechanical device that can lock the rope, preventing an uncontrolled descent.
