Summer Camp Director

Opening Date: March 1, 2008

Program Leader II-III
Starting Salary:  $10.25-10.75
                                               
SUMMARY: This is a seasonal position with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation, working out of the Cape Henlopen State Park.  This position oversees the day to day operation of the Park’s summer day camp program.  Position runs June 1- August 22 (end of camp sessions).  Position may start earlier and run longer.

The experience and responsibilities for this position include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Organizes, plans, and coordinates week long educational day camps for students ages 4-13; may involve planning and implementing off-site field trips
  • Develops, instructs and evaluates educational activities and programs;
  • Supervises other day camp staff and volunteers; working with and leading a team of instructors;     on-site every day of camp, early/late prep work
  • Oversees all First Aid and health related issues including submitting incident and accident reports and securing camper medications
  • Responsible for record keeping and inventory
  • Responsible for camper discipline and parent meetings
  • (Opportunity of working before/after summer camp season as seasonal naturalist)

 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in biology, teaching, or related field or equivalent work experience
  2. MUST have experience working with children, preferably with summer camp experience
  3. MUST be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills
  4. MUST keep a positive attitude and have fun in a fast paced, sometimes hectic environment
  5. MUST have valid driver’s license and pass 15 passenger van training (training provided)
  6. Preference given to candidates with prior education or summer camp instruction; leadership/supervisory experience; conducting canoeing, hiking, fishing or other outdoor activities with children; knowledge of the environment;  Life guard or other certifications

BENEFITS: This is a seasonal position, no standard benefits.  Direct Deposit of paychecks will be required as a condition of employment for new employees.  Non-standard benefits include First Aid/CPR training, possible Canoe Training, and working outside with children.

Summer Day Camp Instructor

Starting Salary:  $9.75/hour
                       
SUMMARY: This is a seasonal position with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation, working out of the Seaside Nature Center at Cape Henlopen State Park.  This position works in the Park’s summer day camp program.  Position runs from June 1 – August 22. This position may start sooner and end later. The responsibilities for this position include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and assist camp director with daily camper activities (teaching, crafts, games etc.)
  • Assists day camp director with planning and preparing camp activities
  • Assists with first aid duties as assigned by day camp director
  • Will involve working before and after camp hours to prepare and clean up as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum 1 year of college coursework in biology, environmental education or related field
  2. MUST have experience working with children
  3. MUST be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills
  4. MUST keep a positive attitude and have fun in a fast paced, sometimes hectic environment

Starting Salary:  $9.75-$10.25/hour

SUMMARY: This is a seasonal position with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation, working out of the Seaside Nature Center at Cape Henlopen State Park.  This position will run from May through August, approximately 40 hours per week.  This position may start sooner and extended through October.

The responsibilities for this position include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct public and group kayak tours within Delaware Bay
  • Conducts school and public programs, focusing on environmental education of the natural history of Cape Henlopen (marine biology, coastal ecology, birding, etc.) and interpretation of local history.
  • Helps develop programs, lesson plans and other educational materials.
  • Assists with maintenance of kayaks, paddles, PFD, safety supplies and other materials.
  • Assists with various tasks to enhance and promote Cape Henlopen State Park’s interpretative plan.
  • Will involve working a minimum of one weekend day.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum 2 years of college coursework in biology, environmental education or related field.
  2. Experience kayaking and/or canoeing; preference given to guide experience and certified paddlers.
  3. Knowledge of natural history, marine biology, ornithology and/or coastal ecology.
  4. Experience teaching and/or working with public and/or school groups.

Seasonal Naturalist

  • Helps develop programs, lesson plans and other educational materials.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of aquariums and live animal specimens.
  • Assists with various tasks to enhance and promote Cape Henlopen State Park’s interpretative plan.
  • Will involve working a minimum of one weekend day and some nights.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum 2 years coursework in biology, environmental education or related field; Bachelor’s preferred.
  2. Knowledge of natural history, marine biology, ornithology and/or coastal ecology.
  3. Experience teaching and working with children and/or interpretation with public groups.
  4. Experience with care and maintenance of fish/aquaria and/or reptiles preferred.
