Brandywine Creek State Park is seeking personnel to fill the following positions:

Day Camp Instructor
Seasonal Naturalist
Maintenance Technician
Fee Collector

Seasonal Naturalist
Program Leader I - II (depending upon experience)

This is a seasonal position with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation, working out of Brandywine Creek State Park and/or Wilmington State Park.  This position will run from March through October, approximately 24-30 hours per week. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conduct school and public programs, focusing on environmental education of the cultural and  natural history of Brandywine Creek and Wilmington State Parks and interpretation of local history.
  • Help develop programs, lesson plans and other educational materials.
  • Assist with care and maintenance of live animal specimens (Brandywine Creek).
  • Assist with various tasks to enhance and promote these State Parks’ interpretative plan.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of one weekend day and some nights.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum 2 years coursework in biology, environmental education, history, art or related field. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a Bachelors Degree.
  2. Knowledge of natural history, entomology, ornithology, cultural history and/or ecology.
  3. Experience teaching and working with children and/or interpretation with public groups.
  4. Experience with river canoeing preferred for Brandywine Creek State Park position.

*Note: Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of State of Delaware employment.

MaintenanceTechnicianDuties include grounds maintenance and building maintenance at Brandywine Creek State Park. 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Mowing grass, trimming, mulching, and other landscaping work.
  • Cleaning of public restrooms.
  • Carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, and other building maintenance work.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and members of the public.
  • Ability to work outside in inclement weather (cold, rain, heat, etc.).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of current state-issued driver’s license.
  • Must be 18 years old as of March 15, 2007. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience or training in grounds maintenance or landscaping.
  • Experience or training in any of the building maintenance trades.
  • Experience operating power equipment.

SALARY: $7.50 per hour.

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week, includes weekends and occasional evenings.

DURATION: Seasonal, most positions end in mid-October.  The possibility exists of work continuing through the winter on a reduced schedule.

Day Camp Instructor
Program Leader I - II

This is a seasonal position with the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, Division of Parks and Recreation, working at Brandywine Creek State Park.  This position assists with the Park’s summer day camp program.

Position runs from June 2 – August 15, 2008.Note: Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of State of Delaware employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead and assist camp director with daily camper activities
  • Assists day camp director with planning and preparing camp activities
  • Assists with first aid duties as assigned by day camp director
  • Will involve working before and after camp hours to prepare and clean up as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum 1 year of college coursework in biology, environmental education or related field
  2. MUST have experience working with children
  3. MUST be able to demonstrate responsibility, dependability and good communication skills
  4. MUST keep a positive attitude and have fun in a fast paced, sometimes hectic environment

Preference given to candidates with a valid driver’s license, prior education or summer camp instruction, conducting canoeing, hiking or other outdoor activities with children; certified lifeguard, knowledge of piedmont ecology and/or the environment.

Fee Collector

PRINCIPLE DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • giving information to the public
  • collecting the entrance fee from park visitors
  • Other tasks as assigned

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work unsupervised and independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and members of the public.
  • Ability to count money/change

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of current state-issued driver’s license.
  • Must be 18 years old as of March 15, 2007. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in customer service
  • Cash handling experience

SALARY: $7.25 per hour.

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week, includes weekends, Holidays.

DURATION: Seasonal, most positions end October 31
