SUMMARY:

An incumbent is responsible for maintenance, construction and restoration of recreational trails within the state park system. It is preferable to have applicants experienced in working outdoors who are comfortable and familiar with using an assortment of hand tools, and have a general knowledge of ecology or other natural science. Crew members must be comfortable with physical labor on various types of terrain and accept changing weather conditions. Crew members are responsible for working within a team environment to carry out trail projects set to specific standards. Duties will include, but are not limited to, general trail maintenance, building new trails and trail structures, trail assessment, data collection, invasive species control, and report writing. Trail duties will include using mountain bikes for carrying equipment into work sites and trail patrols.

· Knowledge of ecological principles
· Ability to think critically and solve complex problems
· Ability to manage multiple priorities
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
· Ability to successfully interface with park managers and staff as well as park visitors
· Ability to examine issues and make appropriate recommendations
· Ability to work effectively on complex projects with little supervision
· Ability to read and interpret maps and other visual data
· Ability to work comfortably in the outdoors in various weather conditions
· Ability to flex with dynamic project demands
· Ability to use trail tools (Palaski, shovel, rake, chainsaw, etc.)
· Ability to quickly learn and incorporate new methods and information
· Skill in establishing job priorities
· Skill in mountain biking and bike maintenance

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation is responsible for 14 state parks that total more than 20,000 acres and contain 140 miles of trail. Within the 14 parks, various terrain types and ecosystems exist from sandy coastal plain in the south to hilly piedmont in the north.

Hourly wage: $9 to start or based on prior experience. Housing available at $125/month. Applications accepted year-round.
