There were between 600 and 800 civilian laborers and
craftsmen on Pea Patch Island engaged in building the fort and outbuildings,
as boatmen,
clerks, and in other duties. Civilian employee Impressions include:

Adult Women Clothing Regulations
•
Cotton work dresses (bodice and skirt) in plain, woven, or period prints with
modest work hoops, corded petticoats or no hoop at all.
•
No white blouses.
•
Day dresses for visitors must have a hoop, be cotton or silk.
•
Skirt/shirt/jacket combinations are allowed for young ladies 13-18 years of
age.
•
All civilian participants must dress appropriately for their socio-economic
class and age. Aprons and outerwear (shawls, capes and coats) should be practical
and of appropriate material and construction.
•
Correct underpinnings are highly recommended and a corset is required.
•
Period shoes and boots of leather.
•
Appropriate headgear: bonnets, slat bonnets.
•
Correct period hairstyle- center part, no bangs, hair confined at or below
the nape of the neck. Hairnets, if worn, must be of correct materials and worn
appropriately.
•
Period eyeglasses or modern contact lenses are permitted. Any jewelry and accessories
should be in keeping with your socio-economic level and situation - simple
or none at all.
•
No make-up, modern hairstyles, bangs, or loose hair; painted fingernails, including
clear and french nails; sweatpants; nylons or visible socks; large hoops; modern
eyeglasses; sunglasses of any kind; zippers; Velcro; plastic buttons or jewelry;
wristwatches; stud or post earrings.
•
Civilian nurses with functional impressions may stay within the casemate hospital.
Nurses are not allowed in the CS barracks. Actual medical care shall be the
responsibility of non-costumed, "modern" emergency medical personnel.
Adult
Male Civilian Clothing Regulations
•
Sack coat, vest and trousers in wool, cotton, linen or jean appropriate for
your socioeconomic level. Possibly a frock coat or paletot.
•
Wool, cotton or wool flannel shirts.
•
Overshirts, shop aprons, smocks or outerwear (shawls, capes or coats) may be
appropriate for your impression.
•
Shell, glass, wood, or bone buttons.
•
Suspenders of correct construction.
•
Neckwear of appropriate materials and correctly tied.
•
Period socks of wool or cotton. Correct underclothing is recommended.
•
Period boots, bootees or shoes, of leather or homemade substitutes.
•
No bare feet.
•
Properly blocked hats or period caps should be worn outdoors.
•
Pocket watches are permitted if suitable to impression. No wristwatches.
•
If needed, wear period eyeglasses or modern contact lenses.
•
Correct period hairstyles and facial hair (if worn).
•
PROHIBITED: Fancy embroidered vests; modern eyeglasses or sunglasses; zippers;
Velcro; plastic buttons; wristwatches; earrings; John Wayne-type bandannas.
