The mission of the Delaware Folklife Program is to conserve local cultural resources through public programs, documentation and technical assistance.
Cultural resources include tangible items such as artwork, tools and buildings, and intangible items such as stories, songs, jokes, customs and values.
Folklife is local culture and includes both the works and ways of life that make Delaware what it is.
Documentation is the recording of local culture, and capturing the stories of people or places that will be important to preserve for the future. Preserving cultural information is one of the few ways to preserve cultural identity over time. |
 |
Documentation can include audio or video interviews, photographs and the recording of historic images. The Delaware Folklife Program |
has a record of 2,500 photographs, 200 hours of audio tape, and a growing collection of video documentation.

Technical assistance is provided to individuals and organizations to help preserve and present the state's local culture.
Individuals use technical assistance when documenting their work. Others who benefit from technical assistance include groups looking to preserve local culture, statewide organizations needing direction in content areas, and regional and national organizations wishing to include Delaware's local culture in their work.

Public Programs include any activity that presents folklife to the public.
Programs come in several forms, from museum-style exhibits, websites and concerts, to lectures and other staff-led presentations.
 |
| The exhibits at the Port Penn Interpretive Center present part of Delaware's folk culture. The Center offers displays and programs which explain the folklife of the historic wetland communities along the shores of the Delaware River. Throughout Port Penn is a series of waysides and outdoor exhibits, detailing cultural sites found within the town. |

The Delaware Folk Art Collection is another |
example of a public program. Folk art is the art of everyday life and often reflects the maker's occupational, ethnic, or community identity. The collection is on permanent exhibit at the Blue Ball Barn in Alapocas Run State Park.
