Fort DuPont Map

Welcome to Fort DuPont. Along this one mile trail, lie the remnants of a military heritage dedicated to defending the Delaware River. You will see the remains of three major periods of coastal fortifications, dating from between the Civil War to the First World War.

At one time, Fort Dupont was part of a three-point defense of the Delaware River, along with Fort Delaware in the center of the river and Fort Mott on the New Jersey shore. Though it never saw actual combat, the fort remained in use through the Second World War. Most of the buildings here date from the first half of the 20th century.

This fort was named for Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont. A native of Delaware and a hero of the Civil War, du Pont is one of the few Naval officers to be honored in this way by the United States Army.

Within the corridor are large expanses of open space containing critical wildlife habitat and countless opportunities to educate and inform the public of the richness and diversity of Delaware's past.

We invite you to learn more about the Coastal Heritage Greenway and visit other stops along the corridor. For more information, call (302) 739-5285.
