The Coastal Heritage Greenway consists of a corridor of
open space running along 90 miles of Delaware’s coast, spanning the area
between Fox Point State Park and the state line at Fenwick Island. The
Auto Tour is your guide to enjoying the diverse cultural and natural treasures
found along Delaware’s coast. From Fox Point State Park, the Coastal Heritage
Greenway heads south to New Castle then follows Route 9 to Dover. This
narrow blacktop road winds through quiet villages, beautiful marsh meadows,
wildlife refuges, and past historic homes and schools. There are also
trails for you to walk as you explore the coast. South of Dover, the Greenway
lies east of Route 1, until south of Dewey Beach, where Route 1 becomes
the center of the Greenway. Maps are provided to help you get on and off
the Greenway and should be used along with a state highway map. The directions
included in this guide are for traveling southbound along the Greenway.
Stops along the Coastal Heritage Greenway are well marked; look for
the Greenway signs as shown on the left. Take time to enjoy a favorite
site or choose a spot that you haven’t visited before. As you make your
way along the Auto Tour, please watch for wildlife and pay attention to
the road signs. Insect repellant is recommended for all outdoor sites
from spring through fall. Remember to Share the Road with bicyclists and
to Buckle Up. When you stop at a site, please find a safe place to pull
completely off the road.

Welcome to Delaware’s Coastal Heritage Greenway. Greenways come
in many forms—biking and hiking trails; boating and fishing sites;
and areas of grass and trees that thread their way through cities
and rural areas. They create connections between parks, natural areas,
and other open spaces. These connections form natural corridors where
wildlife can prosper and people can travel, exercise, and enjoy nature.
Public use and enjoyment of the coast are important in building
support for conservation. The development of hiking trails, bikeways,
and other recreational areas along the Greenway helps to further this
effort. With protection and care, Delaware’s coastline will continue
to enrich our lives. As you explore the Coastal Heritage Greenway,
your appreciation for the natural, cultural, historical, and recreational
richness of Delaware’s coastal region will grow, and you’ll understand
why we must protect this region for future generations.
