Stop #4: Dragon Run

Back to New Castle County Stops

Dragon Run marsh is notable as the largest freshwater marsh system in the northern part of the state. It is highly attractive to waterfowl, muskrats, turtles, and migratory birds.

This is a good place to identify freshwater marsh plants. Here you can easily find arrow-arum, marsh mallow, pickerel weed, arrow head, water lily, spatterdock, bladderwort, duckweed, narrow-leaved cattail, and jewelweed. A narrow, open-water channel runs west to east the length of the enclosure. This channel was originally cut to aid in the state’s mosquito control efforts.
