Clean Marina
Recreational boating is becoming an increasingly popular American pastime. Delaware Clean Marina
Marinas that use environmentally-friendly boating practices can help reduce pollution in our coastal waters. The Clean Marina program encourages marina and boat owners to follow Best Management Practices to prevent or reduce pollution and to improve the quality of our coastal waters.

Environmental Practices at Indian River Marina

Indian River Marina is the first marina in the State of Delaware to achieve Clean Marina Certification. Some of the measures that IRM staff have implemented are:  

  • Dry Stack Storage for boats reduces need for bottom painting
  • Boat travel lift with no-grease fittings reduces the amount of petroleum product used
  • Boat lift is equipped with noise suppression and emission controls
  • Boat bottom wash water is cycled through an oil and water separator before being recharged into ground
  • B-5 Bio-diesel fuel is offered to boaters
  • Marina diesel equipment uses B-20 Bio-diesel fuel
  • Oil pump-out cart with dripless oil change for marina customers allows oil and oil filter to be recycled
  • Battery core exchange program offered to marina customers
  • Grey water pump out service available to boaters
  • Delmarva Solid Waste Authority recycling center located on premises
  • Fuel absorbent socks eliminate accidental spills during refueling
  • Grass buffers filter runoff
  • Free sewage pump-out offered to fuel dock customers
  • Storm water management plan and spill containment and control plan are in place
  • Complete line of Bio based cleaners, lubricants and oil offered at ships store
