1937

The State Park Commission established by act of legislature. The mission was “. . . to preserve and protect the scenic, historic, scientific, prehistoric, and wildlife resources of the State and to make them available for public use and enjoyment.”

1939

Governor Richard D. McMullen appointed the first members of the State Park Commission

1949

Delaware legislature passes the first appropriation for state parks in the amount of $10,000.

1951

Trap Pond State Park is the first state park to admit visitors.

1954

Fort Delaware opened to visitors for the first time for three weekends in July and August.

1956

Brandywine Springs State Parks opened to the public. Gov. Caleb Boggs pronounced this park “the first state recreation facility wholely (sic) purchased, owned, and developed by the State Park Commission.”
