Naturalist's Notes
Cape Henlopen State Park
by Ashlie Kozlowski, Cape Henlopen Naturalist
Read Ashlie's bio.
Fall and winter are the best times of the year to hike the Gordons Pond Trail. Not only because the trail closes on March 1 for beach nesting birds, but also because the cool temperatures keep down pesky insects. I prefer to start at the trail head across from Herring Point and hike to the observation platform at Gordons Pond. This trail meanders through sand dunes, maritime forest and marshes and provides some of the best vistas in the park. Be sure to take your camera and lunch because you will want to spend hours exploring. Trail length is 2.0 miles, one way.
