Beachcombing

  • DATE: November 22, 2009
  • TIME: 2 – 3:30 p.m.

Stroll along Delaware Seashore State Park’s famous undeveloped beach looking for seashells, egg cases and other signs of marine and beach life. Winter storms wash up a treasure trove of objects not typically seen during the mild summer months, so it’s worth bundling up and venturing out! A naturalist will display beachcombing items from the park’s collection before the group heads out onto the strand. Dress for the weather! Meet at the Indian River Life-Saving Station. $3 per person

Turks-Head Knot Bracelets

  • TIME: 1 – 2:30 p.m.

Make your own rope bracelet! These woven rope bracelets have been worn by mariners for ages including the surfmen of the U. S. Life-Saving Service. A rescuer could hook the bracelet and haul victims aboard or ashore to safety should they accidently land in the water. We’ll provide the rope and instruction for you to make your own! Participants must be at least 12. Space is limited, pre-register by calling (302) 227-6991. $7.50 includes materials and instruction

Lantern Tours

Tours are approximately 1 ˝ hours long. Enjoy a guided lantern tour of the circa-1876 Indian River Life-Saving Station Museum with a costumed interpreter. Then walk the same beach where the surfmen performed their nightly patrols more than 100 years ago. Dress for the weather! Space is limited; pre-registration is required. Turks-Head Knot Bracelets

Squid Dissection: From Pen to Ink!

  • TIME: 10:30 a.m. – Noon

Study one of the most specialized squishy creatures of the sea! Dissect a squid of your own and learn about their unique adaptations for survival. At the end of the program, we will cook up our study specimens and enjoy them as the treat known as calamari! The fee for this program is $8 per person and it is suitable for ages 8 and up. Sailor Valentines

In the 1800s sailors, spent months away from home. To fill their down time, the sailors would create “valentines” with a mosaic of tropical seashells mounted in a wooden frame or box. Recreate this old tradition using shells and items found on our local beaches and make a true keepsake valentine for your sweetheart. Seashore Wreath Making

  • TIME: 1 – 3 p.m.

Make a wreath using nature materials found here on the seashore! Start off with a basic grapevine wreath, then hike the beach to collect items to decorate it. We will also use local holly and other trimmings to spruce up your take-home piece. Create a handmade heirloom from a place that’s close to your heart! Outside in the Off-Season: Thompson Island Trail Hike
