WWII Coastal Defense
New York-Philadelphia Sector

Back to Research

The file available here is an Army document that outlines the history and operations of the joint Army and Navy forces that were involved in the defense of the eastern coast of the United States during World War II.

The Coastal Defense unit that was responsible for the area from Delaware to New York was the New York-Philadelphia Sector. This sector was divided into two subsectors. The New York Subsector was responsible primarily for defending the coastline and ports around New York Harbor. The Philadelphia Subsector was concerned with the harbor defense of the Delaware River, but also included shore defense sites as far south as Fort Miles on Cape Henlopen. The document is divided into four sections covering the background of this particular sector, the operations of the sector, its subsectors, and other general information such as definitions, sector commanders, categories of defense, and classes of material.

The document here was obtained as part of historic research on Fort Miles at Cape Henlopen State Park
